We spent a few fun sightseeing hours in Point Loma. You can see the entire Bay area all the way to Mexico.

This is the old Point Loma Lighthouse that was built in 1854 and first lit in 1855.

The Fresnel lens, which was the best technology of that day, was rated to be seen at 26 to 28 miles away.

What seemed like a good location for a lighthouse ended up not being so due to low clouds and fog that obscured the light.

So a new light station was built at the bottom of the hill in 1891. You may also recognize this house as Viper’s house from the movie Top Gun.

The views from up here are beautiful and from January to March, Gray Whales migrate right by Point Loma.

Headed back to the old lighthouse, there is a fresnel lens on display with lots of facts, but of course my punks don’t read all of that… they just like to push buttons. Ahem.

Inside the lighthouse, spiral staircase.

Inside the lighthouse Fresnel lens. They had it blocked off and we couldn’t go all the way up.

Beautiful.

On our way in and out we passed through Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery. There was a service going on in part of the cemetery and it was somber. So somber to look toward the bay and toward the ocean and see all the headstones.IMG_4844

Immediate gratitude overwhelmed me. All this war, all this terror and all these men and women who have served. We’re all born, we all will die, and all that matters is what lies in between. Makes me think… what am I doing with my in between? Sometimes we can make a difference with many, sometimes with just one. My point is… am I making a difference? Makes me think…
